    Reviewer: Todd Ryan (Glenmont, NY)

Don't let the price fool you. There's a reason they've been the industry standard/go-to forever. Big height, big break, big color. The best shell to build your big show around. I use a couple cases of these for my main work, and sprinkle in Chaos, Elite 8 and Smoke-n-Mirrors for fun.

    Reviewer: William Long (Bangor, ME)

Excal shells are very well made; they shoot consistently high and have great effects. I've never heard a bad thing about these shells...when used properly. Great for loading into your own mortar racks when you want to step it up a notch.

This kit is fantastic and the shells are awesome and those HDPE tubes that come with it are an added bonus. I have already bought two and plan on buying more.

Before putting on any fireworks show review and memorize these safety tips:

Follow your state and city laws. It is your responsibility to know your local laws and ordinances for fireworks. Safe handling of fireworks is important to create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Fireworks can be stored for long periods of time without degrading their performance if they are kept in dry conditions. Temperature is not a factor.

    • Buy only legal consumer fireworks. Do not buy illegal fireworks such as "M-80s" or large display fireworks.
    • Follow the instructions printed on each item. Read these instructions well in advance.
    • Use fireworks only in a wide-open area, well away from any buildings, vehicles, or vegetation.
    • Never light fireworks indoors or in confined or enclosed areas.
    • Do not use fireworks near houses. The best places to use them are:
      • A large, empty dirt lot.
      • A beach (if fireworks are allowed there).
      • A large, empty parking lot (if the property owner gives you permission).
      • An island in the middle of a river.
      • A desert area or other wide-open place, well away from cars, buildings or trees.
    • Do not use fireworks on grass or any soft, uneven ground. Only use fireworks on hard, flat, level surfaces. This is very important, to prevent the fireworks from tipping over.
    • Place each firework within a concrete block before lighting it. Or, you can glue the fireworks down onto wooden boards or tape them onto flattened cardboard boxes in advance. This is very important, to prevent the fireworks from tipping over during their performance or
    • Fill a large bucket half way with sand and nestle the item to be shot inside. If it does fall over, the walls of the insides of the bucket will prevent the shots from traveling and will be contained.
    • Bring a large (4 x 8 foot) piece of plywood with you to use as a firing pad, if you will not be lighting the fireworks on pavement.
    • Do not light fireworks inside any metal, glass or any other container that was not specifically designed for this purpose.
    • Remove any hazards such as rocks and other items that can be tripped over in the dark.
    • Only an adult (Display Operator) should light the fireworks due to their potency. Your fireworks have been chosen for their high performance and duration. Only one adult at a time should shoot the show. Confusion can occur when more than one person is lighting fireworks. Children must only watch.
    • Have a flashlight and a bucket of water handy at all times. If you have a fire extinguisher, of course, have it handy as well. If you have a hose nearby, be sure to place it where the display operator will not trip on it in the dark.
    • Wait at least 20 minutes after the show to clean the area of waste. Shells should be doused with water to insure they cannot start a fire. Do not dispose of waste near anything that can burn, like next to your garage or home.
    • Keep the spectators at least 100 feet away from the firing location. In the event of a shell tipping over you do not want it firing into the crowd.
    • Always keep the spectators upwind of the firing location. Any wind must be blowing from the spectators towards the firing location.
    • Always wear safety goggles when lighting fireworks. You can buy safety goggles at any hardware store.
    • Do not wear any clothing such as nylon or plastic that will melt at high heat. Close fitting cotton is preferred to prevent burns. Wear long sleeves, pants and closed toed shoes.
    • Never drink and use fireworks! Remember, alcohol and fireworks don't mix. Impaired judgment while lighting fireworks is very dangerous.
    • Keep the fireworks in a box that you can easily open and close. Take only one item out at a time, and close the box after you take each item out. This is called the "ready box" in professional displays. The box must remain closed so that any falling sparks will not hit the fireworks inside.
    • Multi-shot "cakes" should be glued down or taped down, ideally. If you do not have time to do this, use a concrete block or a set of 4 concrete blocks placed in a square. Set each cake inside the block(s).
    • Ground spinners such as "Ground Gloom Flower," etc. need a large, flat, smooth, hard, level surface to work. The same goes for traveling novelty items such as "Tanks," etc. Bring a large board if no hard, flat surface is at the shooting site.
    • Flying Spinners and helicopters such as "Plane Flying at Night," etc., need a flat, smooth, hard, level surface to spin on before they lift off. Make sure the printed side is up and the fuse is underneath a wing. Do not stand them on end.
    • Roman Candles must be set in a stable rack or other support. Do not hold roman candles in your hand!
    • Light only one item at a time. If you want more than one item to go off, fuse them together in advance of the show so that you have to light only one fuse. Don't try to light a bunch of fuses in a row.
    • Light the firework with a long-handled lighter such as for barbecues, or a jumbo punk or a road flare.
    • Keep your body away from the firework and reach out to light the fuse.
    • Do not have your body close to the firework. Do not have your hand close to the fuse as you light it. The thrust from the fuse igniting may burn your finger.
    • Step back after lighting the fuse, to at least 10 feet away from the firework you just lit.
    • Never, ever, look into a tube that has a shell loaded into it, and never place any part of your body over a tube.
    • Don't try to re-light a dud. Discard all items that misfire or appear to be duds. Just forget it and go on to the next item.
    • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
    • Never light or hold ignited fireworks in your hand.
    • Never throw fireworks from a vehicle.
    • Never throw or shoot fireworks at another person.
    • If you have sparklers, ask everyone to drop their sparklers into a bucket of water when they finish.
    • Children who want to hold sparklers must do so only with their parents' supervision at all times.
    • Keep animals away from the fireworks. Animals are sensitive to sound and are easily frightened by the noise. You should remove animals from the display area to a safe location, preferably indoors.
